Drumline Is Slow-Motion Suicide

Well. What an interesting weekend I've had. Interesting as in fatally exhausting. If anyone is considering joining an indoor drumline for its relaxativatory properties, he should check both himself and his spelling. Let me give you an example of the kind of work we do.

Last sunday:

Extended rehearsal, from 11 AM to 6 PM. That means seven hours of running around like maniacs while attempting to float gracefully across the floor. Seven hours of forced joviality. Seven hours of aching-backed, numb-fingered, blistering, sweaty, spirit-crushing goodness.

Wednesday:

Normal rehearsal, 6 PM to 9:30 PM. Just another three and a half hours of previously mentioned activities.

Friday:

Immediately after school we load a truck full of equipment, load our own posessions onto a single bus, and take off. Rougly five hours later we arrive at our destination high school, unload, and begin another rehearsal. It lasts a full hour past the scheduled time. We get to our rooms at about 1 AM. I'm not even given enough time to comb my hair or plug in a fan before the lights go out. The boy's room sits in absolute silence and uncomfort while we listen to the girls in the next room giggle and have fun. I get approximately two hours of sleep.

Saturday:

We get up early. Practice some more. Change into our uniforms and give a crappy performance. Possibly due to our lack of vitality. Pack up, load the truck, and attend a short, mildly entertaining birthday party. Go home. Again, five hours later, we arrive. My parents are going insane because I didn't notice right away that they were waiting for me, so I don't get to go watch Constantine with my friends. I go home, get to sleep around 3 AM.

Today:

Yet another drumline rehearsal. We don't really get much done. In my opinion, we're all too burned out to concentrate. Ivan moves too slowly, I trip over him and fall flat on my back. My huge bass drum just misses my head and rolls off. I injure my ankle, but continue practicing for fear of appearing to make excuses to skip practice. Now I expect serious bruising.

When combined with concert band pre-contest on tuesday, several tests in school, an English paper due tomorrow, and a Mulligans practice afterwards, this makes for a fairly tiring experience, wouldn't you say? And remember, we're not even a professional drumline. I'd hate to think what kind of practice goes into their shows.

Still, it's pretty awesome.

And the Strongbad says, "Too much of a good thing is an awesome thing, and too much of an awesome thing is...umm...bad. And dumb."
